56 CENTENNIAL Route Frequency Change Proposal

The below is a copy of what I sent in over the weekend to all members of council as well as Don Hull, the transit division as a response to the information report being presented to GIC this Thursday. Below I outline my thoughts and suggestions on how the route could be make more efficient and useful, while not increasing any funding to the route.

It was brought forward in the latest information report that there are no plans to increase service frequency or service levels for route 56 CENTENNIAL during the 2014 budget year. This makes sense in that with reduced demand there is no justification for any increase in service, however not withstanding employment growth and anticipated demand for the area of Confederation Plaza (Walmart), there is a relatively simple way to increase service frequency without resulting in a budget increase for 2014.

No Service Increase Planned for 56 CENTENNIAL

The HSR will be bringing an information report to the General Issues Committee on February 13th with a report on the status of east end route 56 CENTENNIAL. With ridership declines between 2012 and 2013 the report states there are no plans in increase service to route 56 CENTENNIAL for 2014. The HSR will however monitor ridership trends through 2014 with new commercial developments in the area. If ridership increases, the frequency could be increased with daily service from 6:30am until 11:30pm.

The revised HSR route 56 CENTENNIAL commenced operations on March 25, 2012, providing daily transit service along Centennial Parkway North between Eastgate Square and Lakeland Community Centre, via the Confederation Park Shopping Centre. This growing commercial complex includes a Walmart store. The service operates between 10:00am and 6:00pm. Based upon a 5-year net operating cost funding plan approved by Council in 2012, annual net operating costs over the last two years are funded by contributions from a variety of sources, including Walmart.

Fall 2013 Schedule Changes

The Hamilton Street Railway has updated their website with the fall 2013 timetables. Several routes return to their regular weekday schedules after running on reduced summer schedules since June. There aren’t any major changes to any routes although five routes will see minor modifications.

Below are the changes that will take effect Sunday September 1st, 2013.

The below routes will return to regular schedules after operating on reduced summer frequencies on weekdays.

Service Resumes to Wild Waterworks Saturday

Seasonal service to the Wild Waterworks water park resumes this weekend as the park begins summer operations. Route 56 CENTENNIAL, which operates year-round passed the park on Van Wagners Beach Road, will enter the park while it is open.

Wild Waterworks will open for the season on Saturday June 8th and will be open daily until Monday September 2nd, with the exception of Friday June 21st.

As 56 CENTENNIAL does not enter Wild Waterworks during the spring prior to the park’s opening, the timing is not built into the schedule. As such the route may experience minor delays until the summer schedule begins on June 23rd.

Timetables for the summer schedule should be released sometime next week.

Wild Waterworks will be open this weekend from 11am until 7pm and will be open from 11am to 8pm the following weekend. The park will only be open from 4pm until 8pm through the week for the next two weeks with the exception of June 21st when the park will be closed. Beginning June 22nd the park will be open daily from 11am to 8pm.
