To assist HSR buses in making the left turn from westbound King to southbound James, there will be police officers present at the intersection.

Effective Monday, August 11th, 2014 and until approximately Sunday, November 30th, 2014 weather permitting, James Street North between Barton Street and Strachan Street will be closed due to construction.

The work involves road and sidewalk reconstruction and watermain replacement. Urban Braille sidewalk and decorative concrete boulevards will be installed from Barton Street to the new GO station. Traffic calming bumpouts (curb extensions) will also be installed at the intersection of James and Strachan to narrow the crossing distance for pedestrians.

Routes 4 BAYFRONT, 20 A-LINE EXPRESS and 99 WATERFRONT SHUTTLE will be on detour during these times. The details of the detour routings and specific dates are as follows below:

2014 Transit Service Enhancements Approved – Starts September 2014

After the last presentation to GIC left the councillors requesting cuts to the 2014 Transit Service Enhancement Plan, Don Hull made a brief presentation to GIC on Thursday morning with a slightly scaled back plan. The plan will see service enhancements to three routes, two east-west mountain routes (43 STONE CHURCH and 44 RYMAL) as well as one north-south route (20 A-LINE EXPRESS).

Today’s proposal was unanimously passed by the GIC.

The report comes at the request of council last June following the approval of the Rapid Ready report on June 26th, 2013. This report was the first of two coming, with the next report due out in the summer with a ten-year local transit service level strategy, including specific route recommendations and a financial strategy, with reference to the role played by rapid transit, and with a goal of reaching 80-100 rides per capita by 2025.

2014 Transit Service Enhancement Proposal

Don Hull and the public works team will present their proposed 2014 Transit Service Enhancements to the General Issues Committee on February 13th. The proposal recommends service enhancements to two east-west mountain bus routes as well as increasing the area of service on the HSR’s north-south express route, route 20 A-LINE EXPRESS.

The report comes at the request of council last June following the approval of the Rapid Ready report on June 26th, 2013. Effective starting October 17, 2013 on Weekdays from 6:00am until 8:00pm the subject routes will operate on Fennell Avenue, Upper Wellington Street and the Jolley Cut in the Northbound (Downbound) direction, due to the duration of average delays currently being experienced downbound on James Mountain Road.

The detour is as per below:

James Mountain Road Intermittent Detours

Throughout the summer Beckett Drive, otherwise commonly known as the Queen Street Hill, has been closed to all vehicular traffic since June. During that time route 34 UPPER PARADISE has been on detour using James Mountain Road.

This mountain access has become congested at times due to the increase in general traffic. During times of such congestion the bus routes which use this access will be intermittently detoured via the Jolley Cut. This intermittent detour is expected to conclude once Queen Street Hill reopens.

The detour is as per below:

Park-and-Ride Moving Forward

Public Works staff are moving forward with their plans to build a park-and-ride facility at the Mountain Regional Transit Centre on Hamilton Mountain and will bring forward a report to committee on Tuesday with information related to the removal and replanting of trees on the property.

Once approved staff can continue work on the project which is expected to go to tender and start construction before the end of the year.

The Public Works Committee and City Council approved a plan last November to begin designs on a park-and-ride facility at 2200 Upper James St which would provide 72 parking spaces and several bus platforms outside the Mountain Regional Transit Centre, allowing commuters the ability to park their cars at the facility and take transit into the city. Users would have access to the downtown via 20 A-LINE EXPRESS and 27 UPPER JAMES.

The same concept has been in use by GO Transit for a number of years as the regional transit service has multiple Park-and-Ride facilities around southern Ontario, including one in Hamilton at Barton and Nash. That spot is served by the 12 BURLINGTON-NIAGARA FALLS bus.

The shuttle will follow the regular route 20 A-LINE EXPRESS routing and will service all regular route 20 bus stops. At the Hamilton airport, a special bus stop and routing will be in service on the Airport Tarmac, accessed by using the East Cargo Road. The regular route 20 stop at the main terminal building will NOT be in service due to road closures that will be in effect.

Note: This is not a free service and all regular HSR fares will be in effect for this special shuttle.

Report: Enhanced A-LINE & B-LINE Amenities

On Thursday, May 16th, 2013 the Public Works Department for the City of Hamilton will present their report for plans on both transit only lanes in Downtown Hamilton as well as plans for improved A-LINE and B-LINE passenger amenities. Both projects, once approved, would be fully implemented before the end of the year.

Below an excerpt from the presentation for the A-LINE and B-LINE amenities.

In 2008, the City of Hamilton received $29.8 million from Metrolinx “Quick Wins”, to be used for municipal capital expenditures for Transit Vehicles and Infrastructure to support A-Line and B-Line improvements.
