This route is an east-west route that stretches from downtown Hamilton in the west to Stoney Creek in the east. The route operates seven days a week from 5am until 2am with a peak frequency of 8 minutes. This route had two previous short-turn branches route 2B BARTON-KENIILWORTH and Route 2C BARTON-TALBOT.

This route originated as a streetcar route from the early days of the Hamilton Street Railway. The route was a part of the BELT LINE In 1946 when the HSR was sold to Canada Coach Lines (CCL) it was announced that streetcar service would cease. By 1951 the BELT LINE was dropped and replaced with diesel bus service as the KING-BARTON route. It was converted to trolley buses in October 1951 when they were introduced.

After a period of time the KING-BARTON route was split into two distinct routes, 1 KING and 2 BARTON. The Barton route is one of only three routes that operated with trolley buses from 1950 until 1992. The other two routes to have trolley buses were 1 KING, which was formed when KING-BARTON was split, and 3 CANNON.

June 28, 2009 – Present
West Hamilton GO Centre With the reconstruction of the MacNab Terminal the western terminus of the route was relocated to the Hamilton GO Centre. Westbound buses would no longer turn right onto King St W when reaching downtown but would insted continue southbound on James St and then turn left into the Hamilton GO Centre using platform 18. Returning east the bus would turn left onto John St S and contiune on John St until reaching Barton St E. The bus would then turn right and return to the previous routing.

West MacNab Transit Terminal Due to the construction of a building at the corner of Main St E and Hughson St S it was too difficult for buses to make the left turn onto Hughson. Therefore buses were rerouted to continue along Main St E, turn left onto John St S, left onto King St E and then right onto Hughson St. The remainder of the route remained unchanged.

The eastbound portion of the route remained unchanged. Although the construction project has since been completed, the routing has not been changed back.

West MacNab Terminal Routing was slightly modified with buses rerouted to turn left onto Woodward and right back onto Barton instead of using Talbot Rd.

Return trip used the same rerouting with the bus passing Talbot Rd on Barton St E, turning left onto Woodward Ave and then right onto Melvin Ave. The rest of the route remained unchanged.
