It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since we started to promote Transit Driver Appreciation Day in Ontario. It was called “Bus Driver Appreciation Day” back in 2014 when we started to spread the word about the day, which was found online in 2013.

At that point none of the transit agencies in Ontario celebrated the day and now, five years later many do.

On March 18th, join us in celebrating the contributions of our hard-working bus drivers and rail operators! That could be as simple as a smile and a wave when you board the bus or train, and a “thank you” when you leave. And, don’t forget to submit an official commendation for a job well done, so your drivers can be formally recognized for their efforts. (You can do that any time of year!)

The innitiative was started a few years ago by the website http://transitdriverday.org. The day was originally called Bus Driver Appreciation Day, but a few years ago it was changed to be inclusive of all of the transit drivers who operate vehicles other than buses. Streetcars, ferries, and trains are also crucial parts of our daily commute on public transit, depending on where you live.

No matter if you’re going to work or school, shopping or to visit friends, if you take the bus and appreciate the hard work of your transit operator, let them know.

So tell your friends. Share this information with your family. Use the hashtag #tdad and let all of your followers know about the movement. Tell your operator that you appreciate them.
